My husband and I have been married for 10 years, the entirety of his military career. We’ve had many periods of long separation, hectic schedules, moved 7 times, and more. Being away from each other is difficult, but now that we’ve added our two little ones to the equation it makes the transitions, long periods of separations, and solo bedtime routines much harder to navigate.
Our daughter, while not quite 3 yet, is continually affected by these times away from dad. Many times during the day she will ask “Where’s daddy?” or “Daddy’s at work, I see him when he comes home?”. Even if my husband isn’t TDY or deployed, a lot of nights I end up doing the whole bedtime routine solo. For Parker, this can be hard as daddy does bath, stories, songs, the whole bedtime routine with her. Even more so since we’ve added a second baby to our family.
Needless to say, Parker misses her daddy when he is not home.
One thing our daughter is big on is comfort items and her routines. She has a specific blanket and bunny she sleeps with. And lets just say It’s a sad night when those aren’t washed and clean in time for her to head to bed. Most recently we have added a new stuffy to the collection, a cute military teddy bear named “Sergeant Snuggles“.
Why I got this comfort bear
I got this comfort item for her to help with those solo bedtime nights and for when she is missing daddy. I would love to say this is an item we’ll only use for a short time but since my husband will be in active duty service for the long haul, Sergeant Snuggles will be useful for a good while. And so far? She loves him and has been slowly adding him to her regular, daily routines.
When she opened this military teddy bear up we talked about how he looks similar to daddy, and that she can hug or snuggle him on those nights (or long days/weeks) where daddy can’t physically be there. She sat him right next to her bunny. She also wanted me to hold him while we read books (which was super cute).
Using Sergeant Snuggles in the future
As Parker gets older and the time away from dad gets harder, the moves come up, or whatever stage of transition we’ll be in, Sergeant Snuggles will be of great use as a comfort item for her. She’ll be able to snuggle, hold, and have a little something extra during times of stress or missing daddy. It honestly makes my momma heart feel a little better knowing she’ll, and one day James when he’s old enough, have this comfort teddy bear to help ease hard moments.
Military life is hard for so many different reasons, no matter the age of the individual facing going through it. I am one to fully support finding ways, items, and coping skills to help go through this life well. For us right now, this is one of the ways we’re doing that.
Because, when it comes to solo parenting two littles during bedtime routines, I’ll take all the extra help and comfort I can get.
